How to Clean, Care For and Repot Your Decorative Flower Pots

Why pots need cleaning too

Over time, pots build up mineral deposits, salt crusts and old soil that can harbour pests and disease. A clean pot isn't just about looks — it gives your next plant a healthier start.

Removing that white, chalky residue

The white crust on terracotta and ceramic is mineral and salt build-up from water and fertiliser. To remove it, let the empty pot dry, scrub with a stiff brush, then soak in a mix of water and a little white vinegar for an hour. Rinse well and let it dry fully before replanting.

Routine cleaning

  • Wipe glazed and ceramic pots with a damp cloth every few weeks to keep colours bright.
  • For the outside of decorative pots, avoid harsh chemicals that can dull the glaze — mild soapy water is plenty.
  • Rinse saucers regularly so standing water doesn't breed mosquitoes.

When and how to repot

Repot when roots poke out of the drainage hole, water runs straight through, or growth stalls — usually every 12–18 months. Water the plant a day before, ease it out gently, loosen the roots, and settle it into a clean pot one size up with fresh soil. Water lightly and keep it out of harsh sun for a few days while it adjusts.

Make pots last for years

Bring delicate ceramic and terracotta indoors during heavy monsoon battering, and avoid placing fragile pots where they can be knocked. A well-cared-for pot easily outlives several plants.
