How to Choose the Right Flower Pot (Size, Material & Drainage Made Simple)

Start with the plant, not the pot

The prettiest pot in the shop is the wrong one if your plant can't thrive in it. Before anything else, look at what you're planting. A trailing pothos, a thirsty fern and a drought-loving succulent all want very different homes. Match the pot to the plant's needs first — then make it beautiful.

Get the size right

A pot that's too big holds excess soil and water, which can rot roots. Too small, and the plant gets root-bound and stops growing. A reliable rule: choose a pot roughly 2–5 cm wider than the current root ball. When repotting a fast grower, go one size up — not three.

Drainage is non-negotiable

Most plant deaths come down to soggy roots. A drainage hole lets excess water escape so roots can breathe. If you've fallen for a decorative pot with no hole, use it as a cachepot — keep the plant in a plain nursery pot inside it, and lift the inner pot out to water.

Pick a material that fits your habits

  • Terracotta breathes and dries fast — great if you tend to overwater.
  • Ceramic & glazed holds moisture longer — kinder to thirsty plants and forgetful waterers.
  • Concrete is heavy and stable — ideal for tall plants that tip over.

Don't forget the spot it'll live in

A bright balcony, a shady study corner and a humid bathroom all change what works. Heavier pots suit floors; lighter ones suit shelves and railings.
